Written and Directed by Kevin Smith
Starring Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Chris Rock, Salma Hayek and others
One of those highly controversial flicks which promises nothing but entertainment. Ever heard of the director named Kevin Smith? Well, if you are looking for some FUN movies try all of his.
Talking about Dogma, it’s a story about two angels Loki and Bartleby played by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. They get banished from heaven for getting a little high and showing the finger to God. So, they are banished for ever to be on the Earth and even after the end of the human race they are cursed to be at the gates of heaven forever and never enter.
However, what keeps the movie rolling is a loophole found by them to enter Heaven and undo the word of God.
A Catholic church in order to re create the interest in the people to come to church starts a campaign called ‘Catholicism Wow’ according to which the Sunday church will be more fun (with buddy Christ) and anyone who walks through the arc of the church can go to Heaven.
But, undoing the word of god would obviously end the world so God chooses Bethany (played by Linda Fiorentino) who is supposedly the last one in the family tree of God to stop Loki and Bartleby from entering the church.
Bethany meets a lot of people in her journey to New Jersey where the church is located. To start with she meets Metaron – the voice of God (played by Alan Rickman, the guy who plays Prof.Snape in the Harry Potter movies). Then we have Chris Rock playing Rufus who claims to be the 13th apostle and had been left out of the bible coz he’s black.
Then we have Salma Hayek playing Serendipity, a muse who’s currently working as a stripper and who claims that God is a woman. And finally we have Jay and Silent Bob played by Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith himself who are prophets according to the plot who would save Bethany.
All in all with a bunch a very well scripted characters Dogma is great fun, but, one might get the feeling that the makers should spent some time on scripting good scenes for the movie as well especially after all the characters are introduced.
It might seem like the writers have spent all their time scripting wonderful characters and not so interesting scenes.
What should have been a comic classic ends up being just another time pass comedy. But, do watch it at least for the wonderful idea.
